Greek player slaps ref, runs off into mountains to avoid police

Sadly, these video scenes from a local match on the island of Crete reflect the troublesome state of football in Greece at the moment.

We join the action midway through the recent tie between amateur sides FC Coronis and INKA in the city of Chania, Crete.

Overcome with fury at the referee's decision to give a penalty, one particularly perturbed Coronis defender marches over and begins barking at the official from point-blank range before pushing him and slapping him in the face for good measure.

Apparently fearing for his safety, the referee duly retreats to his dressing room, and according to Gazzetta.gr, he proceeds to phone the police and report the physical assault.

With the mayhem refusing to subside, the slap-happy defender apparently panics after hearing the police are on their way and rushes inside to collect his belongings before bidding a hasty retreat up into the surrounding hills to avoid capture!

Madness. Utter madness.
