Belgian town honour Eden Hazard with strange statue

In an effort to pay homage to their most famous footballing son, a quaint town in Belgium have created -- how can we put this tactfully? -- an "eye-catching" statue of local hero Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

Hazard spent several of his formative years on the books at AFC Tubize before leaving to join Lille's youth academy in 2005.

That said, rather than blow the budget on a new slab of marble for Hazard, the town decided to merely re-paint an existing surrealist statue of Michel Platini outside AFC Tubize's stadium to resemble the Belgium star -- hiring original artist Roberto Oliveiro to come back and re-paint the bizarre, flailing and unduly bulbous figureto look more like Hazard.

Due to being slightly busy with the World Cup at the moment, Hazard himself was unable to attend the unveiling but his mum, herself a former professional women's player, went along in his place.

Carine Hazard told So Foot:

"Eden was flattered that we have thought of him. Since 2000, we brought him four times a week to train at the stadium in Tubize.

"He knows about the statue and said it was a fun idea."
