Areas of squad still with shortcomings

Chelsea need quantity to supplement their quality. Cover at both wing-back positions and central midfield are the top priorities, while another forward is also desired.

Has this been a good transfer window for the club?

It certainly hasn't gone entirely to plan (Romelu Lukaku and Alex Sandro would both be at Stamford Bridge if it had) but Alvaro Morata and Tiemoue Bakayoko are promising replacements for Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic.

The decision to sell or loan out so many fringe youngsters also left Antonio Conte's squad dangerously short on numbers to start the season, but as long as adequate squad cover is secured before Thursday's deadline, Chelsea have addressed their most urgent needs.
