Mexicans Abroad: Jimenez nears Atletico deal
Atletico Madrid's deal for Raul Jimenez has yet to be made official, as of 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, but it would be truly surprising if it were to fall through. Both Club America and Atletico Madrid are reported to be happy with the negotiations so far, and it appears that Jimenez's transfer is almost completed. Once details are figured out, the striker will more than likely be presented to Atletico fans on Wednesday.
A $14 million price tag is the number that keeps getting thrown around the media as his apparent cost. That number seems to be enough to make even America sporting director Ricardo Pelaez content with the deal, and it would make Jimenez the most expensive transfer for a Mexican player to Europe. Hector Herrera is currently the record holder after FC Porto gave Pachuca $10.7 million for him back in 2013.
Although Jimenez might have to battle for playing time at Atletico, the transfer is still a very exciting one for El Tri fans. The rest of the "Europeos" may not have made similar headlines, but there is still plenty to discuss regarding the past week.
Javier Hernandez no longer seems to be part of Louis van Gaal's plans at Manchester United. Although nothing has been confirmed from Van Gaal or United, a departure for "Chicharito" seems likely given the abundance of attackers the squad currently has. Southampton, Tottenham, Juventus, Inter Milan and countless others are rumored to be seeking his talents.
Rafael Marquez has already begun training with Hellas Verona in Italy. The 35-year-old has already become a local celebrity, with reports of fans bombarding the defender with autograph and picture requests. Marquez will still play with Leon one final time on Monday when the Liga MX team takes on Barcelona in a friendly.
Carlos Vela is still enduring a plantar fasciitis injury to his right foot. He will miss out on Real Sociedad's friendly against Chelsea on Tuesday. There have been no reports on his expected return.
Guillermo Ochoa had a rough start to his Malaga career after letting in two goals in 20 minutes during a friendly against Fiorentina. It's too early in the season to begin criticizing the goalkeeper, but it doesn't cast a positive light on him at the moment.
Hector Moreno is still injured, but he will hopefully be able to take part in the latter stages of Espanyol's 2014-2015 season.
Giovani dos Santos continues to get a full half of soccer in Villarreal's recent friendlies, while his brother (Jonathan dos Santos) has made late appearances. Giovani won't lose his spot as a starter, but Jonathan still needs to convince the Villarreal management.
Javier Aquino has been loaned out to Rayo Vallecano and debuted for the team in a friendly against AC Cesena on Saturday. Aquino played 63 minutes during the friendly and should be able to easily find a role in the squad's starting XI.
Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes both started for Porto during their friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. The Portuguese side won 3-1 and had excellent performances from the Mexican internationals -- especially Herrera, who looked dangerous throughout the match with his long-distance shots.
Andres Guardado is still riding on the momentum of his excellent World Cup and will have a chance Tuesday to once again show off his talents. Guardado is in Manchester, where he and his fellow Valencia teammates will be taking on Manchester United in a friendly. The 27-year-old hasn't made any major headlines overseas, but he has recently shown that this upcoming season could be his best with Valencia.
Ulises Davila has yet to sign with a squad and hasn't taken part in any preseason friendlies with Chelsea. A move to the senior London team would be shocking, and I assume it is only a matter of time before he once again is sent on loan for another year.
Kalloni FC will have their first friendly of the month against Udinese on Wednesday. Will Nery Castillo make an appearance? The 30-year-old has accomplished very little in his career recently and is looking to again find some of his best days in Greece.
Things are once again looking bleak for Jesus "Tecatito" Corona. He injured his right ankle on Monday at a practice with FC Twente after being with the senior team less than a week. There is no indication yet as to when Corona will be fully fit.
Jonathan Espericueta is still training with Villarreal B. His loan with the squad will end this December.
Partick Thistle's match against Celtic was postponed last weekend. This means Gabriel Piccolo and the rest of his Partick squad will have to wait until Wednesday to play their first game of the season.
