Photos: Arsenal Christmas party a cavalcade of costume brilliance

'Twas the night of Arsenal's fancy dress-theme Christmas party at Libertine nightclub in London on Thursday night and, courtesy of photos posted by Lukas Podolski on his Instragram account, we mere mortals were given a glimpse into some of the truly glorious costume efforts made by the Gunners.

Podolski turned up as The Hulk, with Mesut Ozil as Superman, Santi Cazorla as Super Mario, Mikel Arteta as Zorro and Mathieu Flamini as Woody from "Toy Story," no less ...

Wojciech Szczesny then posted a group shot on his Instagram account of the entire Gunners squad and their various costumes; Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs teaming up as the Bananas in Pyjamas, Per Mertesacker opting for the Captain Jack Sparrow approach and Nacho Monreal adding an air of authenticity to his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume by wearing an inflatable half-shell on his back. However, it was the Polish keeper himself who stole the show with his spectacular Robocop effort (front row)...

A polite round of golf applause is definitely required for that beauty!

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Ashley Cole was also in attendance after Jose Mourinho cancelled Chelsea's Christmas do, which was scheduled for Wednesday, one night after the Blues were sent tumbling out of the Capital One Cup by the Premier League's bottom side, Sunderland.

Mourinho has since refused to admonish Cole for attending the Arsenal shindig, claiming that he is "not a father" and that the out-of-favour left-back can do with his free time as he wishes -- though with the sides set to play each other at the Emirates on Monday, we can't help but raise a quizzical, Ancelotti-style eyebrow at Cole's spectacularly naff timing!
