07.10 BST: Newcastle are monitoring Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier's situation, according to the Chronicle, but AC Milan have also been linked.
Plenty of Wednesday's newspapers lead with a deal that -- apparently -- is not happening, although you'd be brave to reach that conclusion at the rate Southampton are shedding players.
The Guardian is among those to have more on the Saints' resolution to keep hold of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez, both courted by Spurs, as "part of the core that we have decided to keep at Southampton." That quote comes from chairman Ralph Krueger, whose decision-making might just be called into question slightly when the departures he's already sanctioned are taken into account.
Schneiderlin's Twitter outburst would suggest that this horse might have bolted -- and you wonder whether a formal transfer request would now be enough to either player to leave this listing ship.
6 years of an amazing journey #saintsfc DESTROYED in 1 hour !!!- Morgan Schneiderlin (@SchneiderlinMo4) July 29, 2014
There is news in the Sun that Newcastle are back in for Loic Remy, the QPR striker whose move to Liverpool broke down in somewhat mysterious circumstances. Remy's options appear to be few now, and a move back to a club where he scored 14 goals in 27 Premier League games last term might seem a safe bet.
If this one did come off, it would make Newcastle's summer dealings -- which have seen Daryl Janmaat and Remy Cabella come through the door -- look pretty sound. As well as giving them two players with the name "Remy."
And a Lacazette with that, sir?
Would that be instead of, or as well as, Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette? Well, it would be nice to have the choice. The Newcastle Chronicle is quieter on the Remy rumours but says the Magpies have put in an offer for the 23 year-old, who scored 15 Ligue 1 goals last season and 23 in total.
He is rated at 20 million euros by a French side that are traditionally tough negotiators -- but, Remy or no Remy, this would be an exciting one, and perhaps Newcastle's best incursion yet into the French market, if Alan Pardew could pull it off.
Chelsea play hardball
Romelu Lukaku has never had the best of relations with his parent club, and that might not be about to change. The Telegraph says that the Belgian striker has been told to join Chelsea's squad for training on Wednesday; that's hardly a story in itself, but the Stamford Bridge club have apparently put a price tag of 30 million pounds on an asset whom Everton, his loan side of last term, have been planning to prise away for 23 million pounds.
Everton aren't the only ones interested, and there's even talk that Real Madrid are on the case; you suspect that this one is going to carry on for some time yet.
Well, maybe. Inter Milan are still keen on Cardiff's Gary Medel, but the Welsh club is playing hardball over a fee. The Gazzetta dello Sport says that won't deter Inter, who "developed the patience of Job" when negotiating with Rubin Kazan for Yann M'Vila.
They have an alternative if it finally wears thin, though -- apparently they'll go in for Napoli's Swiss, and ex-West Ham, midfielder Valon Behrami if they can't break the Bluebirds' resolve.
