All-Star stats ahead of Bayern clash

The 19th edition of the MLS All-Star Game takes place on Wednesday (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2 and WatchESPN) at Providence Park, home of the Portland Timbers. The MLS All-Stars welcome Bayern Munich, the first time a German club has been the foreign opponent under this All-Star Game format.

Five Aside takes a look at the MLS All-Stars and their Bavarian opponent:

• This is the 11th MLS All-Star Game to feature the MLS All-Stars competing against a foreign club, with the U.S.-based team losing three of the last four contests. The MLS All-Stars won the first five games played under this format but are 1-1-3 since 2009, with the only win coming against Chelsea in 2012.

• There have been three other All-Star Game formats: Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference (six times), U.S. MLS All-Stars vs. World MLS All-Stars (1998) and MLS All-Stars vs. U.S. men's national team (2002).

• Landon Donovan and Brian McBride are tied for the most goals in MLS All-Star Game history with five each. Four of Donovan's five goals were scored in 2001 in the only hat trick in All-Star Game history, and none have come against foreign club opponents.

Dwayne De Rosario has three goals against foreign club opponents, the most of any player under the current All-Star Game format. No other MLS player has more than one.

• Nine players on the MLS All-Star team represented their nation at the World Cup while 11 players from Bayern Munich did so. Eighteen goals were scored at the 2014 World Cup by Bayern Munich players, nearly double what any other club produced (Barcelona, 10).

Nine players in this match represented the United States in Brazil, eight from the MLS All-Stars and one from Bayern Munich, Julian Green. Other nations represented by players in this game include Germany (six players), Brazil (one), Spain (one), Australia (one), the Netherlands (one) and Switzerland (one).

• Bayern Munich is the most successful club in German history, having won more domestic or European titles than any other club in the country. Bayern's 23 league titles are 18 more than its next closest competitor, and it is the only German team to have won multiple European cups (five). Bayern is the fourth MLS All-Star Game opponent to have won a European Cup, joining Manchester United, Chelsea and Celtic.
