Brazilian boy named after so many French footballers he can't remember his name

Luiz Gustavo's absence is a big concern for Brazil, who benefit from his aggression in defensive midfield.
A Brazilian boy has a unique name -- but says he'd rather be named after his favourite player, Luiz Gustavo.

As the tournament rumbles on over in Brazil, a seven-year-old boy from the city of Maceio has hit the news amid the myriad World Cup headlines currently splashed across every newspaper and television screen in the country -- but only after his full name came to light!

Allow us to explain: the boy's father, Petrucio Santos, had previously become absolutely enamoured with France following a family trip to the continent.

So much so in fact, that when his son was born shortly after Brazil were beaten by France at the 2006 World Cup, he decided to name his boy after almost an entire squad's worth of his favourite French footballing idols.

Indeed, it was then that little Zinedine Yazid Zidane Thierry Henry Barthez Eric Felipe Silva Santos was welcomed into the world. Mercifully, the little guy is known simply as "Zidane" -- which is just as well really, as the wee chap has only managed to memorise his first three names.

"I don't know [the rest of my names] yet. I never learned them," Zidane told Globo's G1 website.

As well as Monsieurs Zidane, Henry and Barthez, Gallic-mad dad Petrucio included tributes to Eric Cantona and Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari just for kicks, with Silva Santos being the family name tacked onto the end.

"I was won over by the friendliness of French people," Petrucio, a shopkeeper by trade said.

"I decided to learn the language to be able to speak it without sounding ridiculous if I visit again!"

However, when little Zidane was asked whether or not he liked his name, he grumbled: "No. I would have loved to be named Luiz Gustavo," after the Brazil midfielder -- his favourite player.

Well, if anything, it'd certainly make writing his bank cheques a lot easier.
