England nipping at Bundesliga heels

Thomas Muller's game-winner against the United States extended the Bundesliga's goal total at the World Cup to 26. It was a two-goal lead over the Premier League until Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen struck for Belgium to bring the English domestic league back to within one of the German league to end the group stage.

However, if the one goal scored by a player in England's second-division Championship -- Iran's Reza Ghoochannejhad, who plays for Charlton Athletic -- is added to the Premier League's total, the English and German leagues are even at 26.

Muller's goal also extended Bayern Munich's lead atop the club-by-club table to four over second-place Barcelona with 13 at this World Cup.

Vertonghen represented the 13th different Premier League club to score in the tournament.

Manchester United, while third on the list by club with eight goals, is the only club with six different players to have scored at this tournament -- Mexico's Javier Hernandez, the Netherlands' Robin van Persie, England's Wayne Rooney, Spain's Juan Mata, Portugal's Nani, and Belgium's Marouane Fellaini.
