World Cup Daily: Monday

On June 12, the world's eyes will turn to Brazil for the start of the 20th FIFA World Cup, but the planet's biggest football tournament will have plenty of news and views in the months leading up to it. ESPN FC's World Cup Daily blog is the place to be.

TOP STORIES

-  Luis Suarez is confident, more than confident perhaps, that he will make the World Cup this summer. "Emotionally, I've felt fine; psychologically, I've been spectacular. At no time did I feel pressured, at no time have I felt sad because at no point did I think there was a chance of me missing the World Cup." Read more

- Spain are used to flooding their opponents with possession, but now their World Cup base in the Brazilian city of Curitiba is on alert after receiving a flood warning. "The situation is worrying but it is under control. The Mayor is being extra vigilant and has started flood management controls in the affected areas to minimize the effects of the heavy rainfall for the local population," an official was quoted as saying on the regional government web page. Read more at AS.com

- Music legend Morrissey has wished England luck, and it seems to have had quite an effect on Leighton Baines. Read more at the Liverpool Echo. Read more

PLUS: ESPN commentator Ian Darke gives us his thoughts on this summer's event. Read more

INTERNATIONAL BIRTHDAYS: Eric Wynalda (1969),  Miroslav Klose (1978),  Wesley Sneijder (1984)

DID YOU KNOW?

On this day in 1968, the first South American made it to 100 caps. Djalma Santos was one of the greatest right-backs of all time, "his control and use of the ball being equal to anything any forward could wish to attain" -- and above all a formidable tackler. For the 1958 World Cup Final, Brazil brought him in for his only game of the tournament, to counter the threat of Sweden's brilliant little left-winger Lennart 'Nacka' Skoglund, who disappeared without trace under Djalma's watchful eye. Four years later, Djalma helped Brazil retain the trophy, but he was past his best in 1966, when they lost to Hungary and Portugal. So today's match was a goodbye to a former great. Djalma was 39 years old by then, but he celebrated his 100th and last official senior cap with a win, Brazil beating Uruguay 2-0 in Sao Paulo -- Cris Freddi.
