Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta's arrival a massive boost for J.League and Asia

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta was presented as Vissel Kobe player.
Spanish champions Barcelona ended their campaign with a 1-0 home win over Real Sociedad and paid an emotional farewell to departing captain Andres Iniesta.

The saga of where Andres Iniesta will go next is officially over. Not China, Australia or the Middle East (like former Barcelona teammate Xavi) but Japan. The J.League is now home to one of the best players in the world and Vissel Kobe are once again showing their ambition to move from a middling Japanese team to the best in Asia.

It is only a matter of time before the 2010 World Cup winner slides the ball through a packed Japanese defence for 2014 champion Lukas Podolski to score a goal for the...

Guangzhou Evergrande drop five points behind Shanghai SIPG after loss

Fabio Cannavaro is hoping his Guangzhou Evergrande side will come back from the Chinese Super League's two-month World Cup break mentally refreshed after the seven-time champions dropped further off the pace with a 2-0 loss against Beijing Renhe on Sunday.

Benjamin Moukandjo and Augusto Fernandez scored for the newly promoted side as Evergrande dropped five points behind leaders Shanghai SIPG, who defeated Jiangsu Suning 2-0 to return to the summit ahead of the finals in Russia next month.

Late Wu Xinghan winner helps Shandong Luneng go top of table

Wu Xinghan's 93rd-minute winner moved Shandong Luneng to the top of the Chinese Super League standings as Li Xiaopeng's side handed Tianjin Teda a last-gasp 2-1 defeat on Friday.

The win moves Shandong three points clear of Shanghai SIPG, who play fourth-placed Jiangsu Suning on Sunday evening in the final round of matches before the league takes a two-month break for the summer's World Cup finals.

But despite the win -- Shandong's seventh from 11 league games so far this season -- Li was far from...

Tianjin oust Evergrande to advance to Asian Champions League quarterfinals

Guangzhou Evergrande are out despite a Ricardo Goulart brace

Guangzhou Evergrande crashed out of the Asian Champions League on Tuesday evening as Fabio Cannavaro's side were eliminated by Tianjin Quanjian on the away goals rule following a 2-2 draw that takes the Chinese Super League side into the quarterfinals of the continental championship.

Ricardo Goulart scored twice for Guangzhou in front of their own fans at Tianhe Stadium but goals from Alexandre Pato and Wang Jie secured Tianjin's passage to the last eight for the first time in the club's history.

Saudi cup final sees 'plane' follow ball

Al Ittihad emerged victorious over Al Faisaly in the Saudi Kings Cup final on Saturday evening -- a game that also happened to feature one of the strangest advertising stunts ever witnessed at a football match.

Indeed, fans were left scratching their heads as a miniature jumbo jet plane (carrying a full flight crew) was rigged up to follow the movement of the ball as it moved around the pitch.

While utterly bemusing, the elaborate gimmick certainly gave new meaning to the phrase "flying down the...

Asian Cup draw: Australia to renew rivalry with Syria in Group B

Defending champions Australia will renew their rivalry with Syria at next year's Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates after the pair were drawn to face each in the group phase of the continental championship.

The Socceroos brought Syria's remarkable run in qualifying for the World Cup to an end last September in a thrilling two-legged encounter before beating Honduras to progress to the finals in Russia.

But the Syrians, who have overcome a civil war that has ravaged the nation to become one of...
