Giovinco's set-piece prowess boosts his Audi Player Index total
With his 72nd-minute goal against the New York Red Bulls on Monday, Sebastian Giovinco gave Toronto a 2-1 lead heading to Sunday's second leg of the conference semifinals (5 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN).
The 27-yard goal came on a direct free kick, something Giovinco has seemingly mastered during his three MLS seasons.
Giovinco scored on six direct free kicks during the 2017 regular season, setting a league single-season record -- direct free kicks have been tracked since 2003 -- and , since joining MLS in 2015, he has a total of 14 goals on direct free kicks in the regular season and playoffs. No other player has more than six such goals in that span.
Overall, he had 16 goals in the 2017 season, giving him 55 goals in 86 games in his three MLS campaigns. Only David Villa -- 63 in 94 -- and Bradley Wright-Phillips -- 58 in 100 -- have more since 2015.
Giovinco isn't just a scoring specialist either: His 41 regular-season and playoff assists are second-most in MLS since the start of the 2015 season, trailing only Sacha Kljestan (53).
