Marco Van Basten leaves FIFA technical role after two years

Marco van Basten will leave his role as FIFA's chief technical development officer at the end of the month, world football's governing body has announced.

Netherlands legend Van Basten, who joined FIFA in 2016, helped the organisation develop technology and innovation.

Last year, he put forward proposed changes to the laws of the game, including scrapping offside and introducing orange cards to send players to sin-bins for 10 minutes.

"After two good and interesting years I decided to put an end to my duty at FIFA, mainly to be able to spend more time with my family in Amsterdam," Van Basten said.

"I learned a lot being in a position to influence this game from the other side. The World Cup in Russia with the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee was a nice milestone."

FIFA Deputy Secretary General Zvonimir Boban said: "Since joining the organisation, Marco has been instrumental in the growth and development of FIFA's technical development division.

"I would like to thank Marco for his work at FIFA and would like to wish him all the best for the future."
