Diego Costa voted ESPN FC Player of the Month for August

Diego Costa has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Chelsea.

Europe's top performers for August were whittled down to a three-man shortlist in consultation with stats website WhoScored.com and ESPN FC's writers.

Lionel Messi, Diego Costa and Karim Bellarabi were those in contention, but with a huge 63.2 percent of the vote, you named Chelsea striker Costa your ESPN FC Player of the Month for August.

Barcelona star Messi was second and Bayer Leverkusen winger Bellarabi third in the first poll of the 2014-15 season.

- Lythell: Costa unfairly painted as villain

Whether you agree with Costa's triumph or think someone else should have got the nod, let us know on Facebook and Twitter -- using the hashtag #espnfcplayer -- as well as in the comments section below.

NOTE: Only players with two or more appearances were considered.

DIEGO COSTA (Chelsea)

Some players take a little while to adapt when moving from La Liga to the Premier League but Diego Costa has settled in immediately after arriving at Stamford Bridge in a 32 million-pound deal from Atletico Madrid -- his four goals in three matches co-inciding with Jose Mourinho's side taking an early lead in the Premier League standings.

Costa struck on his Chelsea debut at Burnley, netted another goal on his Stamford Bridge bow against Leicester City and then followed that up with an important brace against Everton, to ensure Chelsea maintained their 100 percent winning league start. Costa's impact is all the more impressive given that it took recently-departed Chelsea striker Fernando Torres 39 matches to reach the same four-goal tally for the club.

As ESPN FC's Chelsea blogger Phil Lythell notes: "Diego Costa might only have played three games for his new club but he has made such an impact that Chelsea have cemented themselves as title favourites already. His four goals are only part of the story; Costa's work rate, team ethic and willingness to muck in in all areas of the pitch have also contributed to him instantly becoming a crowd favourite at Stamford Bridge.
