ESPN FC's Raphael Honigstein revisits the illustrious career of Franz Beckenbauer and the leadership role he played both on and off the pitch.

The ESPN FC readers have spoken. Former West Germany and Bayern Munich skipper Franz Beckenbauer is the greatest captain of all time.

Beckenbauer finished ahead of second-placed Roy Keane in our vote, with Carles Puyol a close third in the shortlist of 10 of the finest skippers to have graced the game.

Ex-Manchester United captain Keane actually received the most No. 1 votes, but Beckenbauer scored the most points overall: 65,935, compared to Keane's 58,250.
