The ESPN FC readers have spoken. Former West Germany and Bayern Munich skipper Franz Beckenbauer is the greatest captain of all time.

Beckenbauer finished ahead of second-placed Roy Keane in our vote, with Carles Puyol a close third in the shortlist of 10 of the finest skippers to have graced the game.

Ex-Manchester United captain Keane actually received the most No. 1 votes, but Beckenbauer scored the most points overall: 65,935, compared to Keane's 58,250.
