Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone on the verge of Champions League glory

The 2016 Champions League final is here. Who will win? And what are the best bets? Let's take a look ...

Atletico Madrid can make history

For the second time in three years the two Madrid teams, Real and Atletico, will go head to head for the Champions League. But unlike two years ago, when Real came out on top after extra time having equalised in the 93rd minute, Saturday could well see Atletico win the competition for the first time in their history.

Atletico have finished runners-up on two occasions but having taken out Barcelona and Bayern Munich to reach the final, there is no question they will deserve their triumph if they can deny Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and co. this time round. The good news, potentially, is that Ronaldo is struggling to be 100 percent fit and though Real have enough players to cope without him, it would be a huge blow if he does not make it.

Even if he does, Atletico have shown time and time again this season and over the past few campaigns under Diego Simeone that they are an obdurate, fit, organised and bruising side who give their opponents no space. They have the ability to hit anyone on the counterattack through Antoine Griezmann and perhaps, Fernando Torres.

Torres has never won a final with Atletico but has won seven finals with club and country, including the Champions League with Chelsea and the European Championships and World Cup with Spain. Having returned to the side where he began his career, it would be just like him to have a role in making history for them this time.

Atletico have not lost to Real in the past six league meetings, though they were edged out 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Champions League last season. The pain of losing two years ago will have hurt badly and you can bet your bottom dollar that Simeone will motivate them enough to go all out for victory.

All in all, it's bound to be close but Atletico have the belief and desire to edge it. Bet365 make them 6/4 to win in 90 minutes and 11/10 to win the trophy, which is much safer and worth taking. A 2-0 win for them is 10/1, Torres is 12/5 to score at any time and just in case, try the 16/1 on Atletico to win after extra time.
