UEFA members convinced of Michel Platini innocence - FFF chief Le Graet

The power brokers in European football all believe that suspended UEFA president Michel Platini is innocent and should still run in the FIFA presidential election, according to his French Football Federation (FFF) counterpart Noel Le Graet.

Along with FIFA president Sepp Blatter, Platini was last week provisionally suspended for 90 days by FIFA's Ethics Committee in the wake of a Swiss criminal investigation.

Swiss authorities are examining a 2011 payment made by FIFA to Platini for work that was conducted at least nine years earlier.

Both the former France international and Blatter deny any wrongdoing and on Thursday Platini received the backing of all 54 members of UEFA, which is the administrative body for European football.

Le Graet had already expressed his belief that Platini was still the "right man" to stand for election in February in a bid to replace Blatter as the head of football's world governing body.

Speaking after Thursday's meeting at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, the FFF president said support for Platini had been virtually unanimous.

"There was almost nothing but compliments for Michel," L'Equipe quoted Le Graet as saying. "There were barely two or three little remarks [questioning Platini] but nothing major, and there was no need for a vote so that everyone might be behind him [in his bid for presidency]."

UEFA has called on FIFA to examine Platini's appeal against his suspension as quickly as possible.

Le Graet confirmed that, following a brief discussion on the matter, UEFA have no "plan B" in terms of putting forward another European candidate for the FIFA presidential election.

"Michel Platini's lawyer was brilliant," Le Graet told Le Parisien. "His report was clear and provoked very few questions and no arguments.

"On the contrary, I have the feeling that the assembly was convinced of Michel's innocence."

Le Graet did accept, however, that UEFA's support for its beleaguered president does have limits.

"If FIFA's appeals committee and the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirm the suspension, well, then it's clear that Michel Platini will not be able to stand for election," he said.
