Nigeria beat Mali to defend Under 17 World Cup title in Chile

Nigeria retained their FIFA under-17 World Cup crown with a 2-0 win over Mali on Sunday.

Samuel Diarra saved an early Osinachi Ebere penalty after a Chato handball and the Nigerian's follow-up effort hit the bar before the Mali defence smothered a third attempt to score.

Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali went close, then Mali's Boubacar Traore had a glancing header which was tipped over by Akpan Udoh.

With the score 0-0 at half-time, Nigeria coach Emmanuel Amunike sent his players out for the second half well motivated and it paid off with a number of chances.

Victor Osimhen smashed an effort which was saved well by Diarra then Udochukwu Anumudu hit the crossbar.

Then the deadlock was broken. Substitute Chinedu Madueke's pass was converted by Osimhen who netted his 10th goal of the tournament to set a new record for most goals (beating Florent Sinama Pongolle, 2001, and Souleymane Coulibaly, 2011.)

Minutes later it was 2-0 as Funsho Bamgboye burst down the left and hammered the ball home.

Mali tried to force their way back into the game and had a few chances from set-pieces, but Nigeria held firm to claim their second U17 World Cup title.
