Andik's double Selangor mission in Malaysia Cup final vs. Kedah

Selangor winger Andik Vermansyah will be on a dual mission in the Malaysia Cup final on Sunday.

Victory against Kedah at the Shah Alam Stadium would not only make him the only Indonesian to claim two Malaysia Cup titles for the Red Giants, it would also spark rapturous celebrations in his homeland.

"This is my second Cup final, and one I am hungry to win to break the Bambang [Pamungkas] record," Andik told ESPN FC, with a smile.

Bambang was another Indonesian crowd favourite with Selangor, and inspired them to a treble success in 2005, along with another Merah Putih attacker in Elie Aiboy.

A decade later, Andik and Co. ended that title drought, following a 2-0 win over Kedah in the final to clinch a record 33rd title.

A repeat success would be the perfect tonic not only for Selangor fans, but also in Indonesia where the diminutive flyer remains a hugely popular figure.

"My performance is followed closely in Indonesia, and I am sure everyone will be following the final with huge interest. Not only that, we have many Indonesians in Selangor who will be coming to cheer for me and the team as well," he said. "Seeing them would definitely be a huge motivation to me."

The softly spoken Andik has had a calming, yet influential presence at the Malaysia Cup champions since signing in 2014.

This season, Selangor were winless in six games in Andik's absence before he returned to inspire them to a 3-0 win over Pahang in the group stage on Aug. 9.

He was rewarded with captaincy, and continued his excellent form in the tournament.

"We have been doing well in the Malaysia Cup, so it's only right we win it. But Kedah can't be taken for granted, they have good players, both local and foreign. We will need to play our best to win."

Victory in a second consecutive final would also set the tone for Andik to go on and rally Indonesia to their maiden title in November's AFF Suzuki Cup.

"It would be a perfect year if I win with both Selangor and Indonesia. But my focus for now is solely on Sunday's game," Andik said.

Indonesia had their year-long ban lifted by FIFA in May, and they went on to beat Malaysia 3-0 in their first competitive action in September.
