Singapore's Sundram frustrated by team's inability to convert chances

Head coach V. Sundramoorthy is frustrated that Singapore haven't been able to capitalise on their chances, with their winless streak stretching to five games after Tuesday's 2-0 defeat in Hong Kong.

Despite creating several goal-scoring opportunities, the Lions came up empty-handed for the second time in four days.

On Friday, they dominated Malaysia at the Sports Hub, but drew 0-0.

"It was a very good game, very exciting and there were chances for both teams," coach Sundram told The New Paper.

"The difference is that Hong Kong took their chances while we didn't manage to convert ours."

Singapore have now gone 233 minutes without scoring. Their last goal came when Safuwan Baharudin netted in a 3-1 defeat by Bahrain in Riffa on Sept. 1.

With 19-year-old Irfan Fandi given his senior debut as he started upfront with Khairul Amri, Singapore had some bright spells, but fell behind to Alexander Akande's goal just before half-time.

Hong Kong made sure of the victory in the 70th minute when Huang Yang showed composure to shoot past Izwan Mahbud.

Despite the defeat, Sundram is hopeful that it will all come together in next month's AFF Suzuki Cup, with Singapore opening their campaign against co-hosts, Philippines, on Nov. 19.

"This match [in Hong Kong] is good preparation for the Suzuki Cup, which we will also be playing away," he added.
