Atsushi Kawata and Albirex ready to seal maiden S.League crown

Albirex Niigata (S) are on the brink of becoming S.League champions for the first time in their history and are determined to ensure they do not slip up twice in a row.

The White Swans take on Hougang United at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday evening with a six-point lead at the top of the table, aware that a victory would be enough to guarantee them the title with two games to spare.

They had a similar chance to all but end the championship race in their previous outing, only to fall to a shock 2-0 loss to Warriors FC on the same ground.

Nonetheless, Albirex striker Atsushi Kawata, their top scorer so far this year with 18 goals to his name in all competition, is confident they will avoid a similar fate on Friday.

"We were not able to play to our usual ability in the last game," the 24-year-old told ESPN FC.

"Perhaps we were a bit nervous and, for some reason, we don't seem to enjoy the best of times against Warriors.

"The chance was there for us but we didn't play to our best but, this time, we're motivated to not be affected again by the excitement and the nerves."

A draw against the Cheetahs would mean that third-placed Tampines Rovers, who have three games left to play, still have a mathematical chance of overtaking them at the summit.

However, considering they have been the dominant side in the competition throughout 2016, Kawata believes they can get the job done as long as they treat Friday's clash like any other game.

"This time, we will learn from our mistakes," he added.

"We must enter the game with a stable frame of mind and have the same condition and approach as always.

"Of course, we are fully aware that Hougang are a good team but we can do it, as long as we trust in what we have done in the past."

Should Albirex seal the title on Friday, they will move one step closer to claiming an unprecedented quadruple, with the Community Shield and League Cup already in the bag and a Singapore Cup final date with Tampines Rovers at the end of the month.

Albirex have emerged triumphant in both their previous meetings with Hougang this year, claiming a 2-0 win back at the Jurong East Stadium in April before defeating the Cheetahs 2-1 at the Hougang Stadium two months later.
