Malaysia's Christie Jayaseelan hopeful of Suzuki Cup despite facial injury

Being dealt an unfortunate injury at the business end of a domestic campaign can take a toll on even a model professional, but Felda United's livewire Christie Jayaseelan is trying to look for the positives.

In a setback that rules him of the remainder of the Malaysia Super League (MSL) season, the direct running winger was elbowed in the face during Felda United's 2-0 defeat away to Negeri Sembilan in the Malaysia Cup Group C clash last week.

Christie's injury, which required surgery on four broken right cheek bones, will leave him sidelined for the next two months, putting in doubt his hopes of the making the national cut for the AFF Suzuki Cup in November.

The softly spoken footballer was itching for his first taste of the regional showcase, but, for now, simply wants to get back on the field for Felda.

"At the moment, I can't wait to just start stretching. The doctor has advised to refrain from any physical exercise for the time being, to let the wounds heal. It will take a few weeks before that happens," Christie told ESPN FC.

"It is a big blow to be out at this stage and not being able to help Felda, but I will be on my toes to try and make it back for the final few games of the season. We are doing well and if I can return to play some part, it would do my [international] chances a world of good."

Christie has been one of the pivotal figures for the Fighters this season, a key part of their fluid attack which has seen them push defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim every inch of the way.

The tricky attacker, who could only watch as Felda were beaten 3-2 by the Southerners at Jengka on Wednesday, faces a race against time to salvage his year.

"The season is not done for me. But it will be tough, because I also need playing time before the season ends for the coaches to assess me. My comeback and performance after that would have to be earned through hard work," said Christie.

Kim Swee has called on a new breed of wingers in his 24-man squad, who scheduled to play a friendly against Indonesia in Solo on Sept 6. They include debutants Fakrul Aiman of PDRM FA, T-Team's Safawi Rasid, while Wan Zack Haikal was recalled to prove himself after coming into form for Kelantan.

But for Christie, donning the national jersey would be incentive enough in a rollercoaster season which has seen him help Felda to second place in the league and into the Malaysia Cup knockout stage.

"I am 30 this year. If I take care of myself, I can play a few more years. I have had a good season and making the AFF Cup squad would certainly top that. I just have to work hard to be fit and have enough time to put myself for selection," said Christie.

Felda United will play T-Team in the Malaysia Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, with the return leg on Sept. 17.
