Singapore set up base in Cambodia ahead of Suzuki Cup warmup friendly

Singapore have set up base in Phnom Penh ahead of Thursday's international friendly against Cambodia, looking to put their disappointing Japanese tour behind them.

The Lions lost two of three matches in Japan -- including a 3-2 defeat to a Niigata university side -- and could face an awkward test against a Cambodian team looking for a psychological edge ahead of November's AFF Suzuki Cup.

To secure their place at the 2016 Suzuki Cup, Cambodia need to go through October's AFF Championship qualification against Brunei, Laos and Timor-Leste.

But they will have the advantage of staging the four-nation tournament. The winners will join co-hosts, Myanmar and Philippines plus Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Singapore secured 4-0 and 2-1 victories over Cambodia in last year's 2018 AFC World Cup qualifying campaign, but are expected to face a tougher test this time.

Lee Tae-hoon's side are unbeaten in their last three matches, including a 4-2 victory over two legs against Chinese Taipei in the playoff round for 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification last month.

Cambodia's FIFA ranking is 180th in the world, up four spots on the latest table, but 22 places behind Singapore at 158.

V. Sundramoorthy's side are coming off a 3-0 loss to Albirex Niigata on Sunday. The Lions were never in the game against the J.League outfit after conceding three goals in the opening 15 minutes. After the match, coach Sundram again stressed that performances in Japan were more important than results.

After Thursday's match in Phnom Penh, Singapore are expected to play more Suzuki Cup warm up games in the next three months, including a home friendly against neighbours Malaysia on Oct. 7.
