Kedah's Shane Smeltz hits the ground running in Malaysia

New arrival Shane Smeltz has promised to continue to deliver the winning factor for Kedah after his explosive start in the green and yellow of the northern state side, which has seen three goals in his first four games.

Kedah head into Tuesday's away match against Penang in the Malaysia Super League on the back of a Smeltz-orchestrated 1-0 MSL victory over T-Team on Saturday.

Smeltz's 50th minute winner against the Terengganu-based outfit set social media abuzz after his swivel and half volley into the top corner propelled Kedah into fourth place on the table.

It was the only goal of the game in heavy and wet conditions at Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar.

All his three goals so far have come against T-Team. Smeltz also grabbed a brace in the 2-0 away win in the Malaysia Cup on July 20.

A little messing around after last nights win with @liridonkrasniqi_8 and our Kit Man. Thank you for all the support! We go again

"I am obviously happy with my start in Kedah colours," Smeltz told ESPN FC. "Everything is still quite new to me, but I have played in a few countries and a lot of international football, so that helped me adapt quickly. We are in a good position in both the league and Cup, and we hope to continue.

For someone who had not played competitive football in five weeks, Smeltz surprised even himself by how fast he has acclimatised to the steamy conditions of Southeast Asia, not to mention the change in football environment after his move from Sydney FC.

"I didn't know how quickly I would settle. I came from an off-season in the A-League, and I wouldn't say I am 100 percent, even though I've had a good rest. But credit to the club who have helped me settle in nicely, which allowed me to focus immediately on the football.

"The fans are quite fanatical, and it gives you a real buzz. Technically there are a lot of good players, and many teams emphasise on attack, which is what the fans want to see," Smeltz said.

The 34-year-old is a twice winner of the A-League Golden Boot and is best known for his feats with Wellington Phoenix, Sydney FC and Gold Coast United.

He's the A-League's second top scorer of all time, with 89 goals from 178 appearances, behind only Archie Thompson (90 goals).

Smeltz has 51 caps for the New Zealand national team, with a healthy return of 24 goals. Two moments, though, stand above others in his memory for country and club.

"It wasn't my most beautiful goal, but the strike against Italy in the 2010 World Cup stands out. The goal of the year [against Melbourne Victory] in the A-League is another unforgettable one," said Smeltz.

Smeltz was part of the New Zealand side who drew 1-1 against defending World Cup champions Italy and went through the group stages of South Africa 2010 with an unbeaten record.

But goals are not the only thing the Germany-born, Australian-raised striker hopes to provide for his new team until the end of the season.

He said: "My experience counts for a lot. There are many young players in this Kedah team, and I hope to help out in that side of things. I am also looking forward to trying out the local dishes.

"I have been mostly eating hotel food since we are on the road often, but I've heard so much about the food."

Apart from a disastrous 5-0 defeat at champions Johor Darul Ta'zim last weekend, Kedah coach Tan Cheng Hoe must be pleased by the instant impact that Smeltz has made after previously complaining about a lack of goals from the 2015 Malaysia Cup finalists.
