Benfica's Rui Vitoria says game 'went as we expected' despite loss to Bayern

Benfica boss Rui Vitoria was content with his side's performance despite losing 1-0 at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.

The Portuguese club limited the favoured hosts to very few clear cut chances after Arturo Vidal's second-minute goal.

"The game went as we expected," Vitoria said. "I am proud of my players -- we played really well here. Of course we had our problems but in the end we played quite well.

"Of course I am not too happy with the result, but overall we played really well and we followed our strategy."

Jonas Oliveira had Benfica's best chances but the 32-goal forward shot straight at Manuel Neuer and later saw a effort repelled by substitute Javi Martinez just in front of his own goal line before snatching at the rebound and slicing the ball high and wide on the volley.

"We played well and that early goal did not kill our confidence," Vitoria said. "We were able to cause some problems for Bayern and we might even have deserved a goal."

Jonas will not be available for the second leg after picking up a yellow card, but Vitoria was not overly concerned.

"Of course we will miss Jonas, but another player will get his chance," the manager said. "It is not about indviduals, it is all about the team."

Most importantly Vitoria said the result gave his team a chance at advancing from their home leg.

"Everything is still open, we have a second match next week and we will give it our best again," he said.
