Al-Ahli considering Aimar swoop

Dubai-based Al-Ahli are interested in signing Benfica midfielder Pablo Aimar but have yet to decide whether to lodge a bid.

Pablo Aimar remains a key player for Benfica.
Former Argentina international Pablo Aimar has been with Benfica since 2008

Al-Ahli have already made one significant signing this month, with Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma joining on a free transfer, and director of football Roy Aitken has said the interest in Aimar, 33, is real.

However, Aitken said there was no certainty that the player would be moving to the United Arab Emirates, despite Portuguese reports suggesting the deal was agreed.

"At the moment there is not much we can say on the Aimar situation," Aitken told Sport360°. "He is a player the president is interested in, but equally there is no rush to make any more changes at this stage. That could change as we go through the rest of the transfer window, but at this stage we are just sitting tight with what we have."

Al-Ahli coach Quique Sanchez Flores was guarded about the prospects of a deal earlier this week, saying: “I don’t want to speak about Aimar because he is not a player of Al-Ahli.

“At the moment we have Grafite, Quaresma and (Luis) Jimenez as our foreign players. I was with Aimar at Benfica and I know a lot about him but I don’t want to speak.”
