Benevento on brink of breaking Man United record after 12 defeats

Benevento are one game away from breaking Manchester United's record of 12 consecutive league defeats from the start of a season after Sunday's Serie A loss at Juventus.

The match -- in which the promoted side had led -- equalled the record among Europe's top five leagues set by United in the 1930-31 season.

Benevento next face Sassuolo on Nov. 13 when they will hope to emulate that United side, whose 13th league game brought a 2-0 win against Birmingham. However, United still finished bottom of the table.

Benevento have work to do if they are not to be relegated with a season-low Serie A points tally after Pescara just set that record with 18 last season.

Pescara won two games, with a further victory awarded by default after Sassuolo fielded an ineligible player in an early-season win against them.

Benevento had been within seconds of picking up their first point of the season at Cagliari just a few weeks ago when Pietro Iemello equalised from the spot in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

But Leonardo Pavoletti condemned the Campania club to an agonising 2-1 defeat with practically the last kick of the game.

Last month, Benevento sacked Marco Baroni and named Roberto De Zerbi as their new coach after becoming the first squad in Serie A history to lose their first nine matches of the season.
