Belgium's Nacer Chadli: Marc Wilmots lacked respect with Euro 2016 decision

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Nacer Chadli has accused former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots of "a lack of respect" over his omission from the nation's Euro 2016 squad.

Chadli, 27, had been a regular for Belgium in the seasons leading up to the summer's tournament in France, but following a 2015-16 campaign in which he made just 10 Premier League starts for Tottenham Hotspur, he was left out of Wilmots' 23-man squad for the competition.

Chadli, who left Spurs to join West Brom in a club record £13 million deal in the summer, told Sport/Foot Magazine that Wilmots should have handled the decision better.

"To pick me for four years and then not call me to announce the news, it's a lack of respect," Chadli said. "I didn't get a telephone call, nor a message."

Chadli feels Wilmots, who was replaced by Roberto Martinez in the summer, had been influenced by the media with his decision.

"That's sure and certain," Chadli said. "We're all human, and even if you think you make your own choices, you're unconsciously influenced by what is said on TV or written in the press. It happens every day: we're influenced in some way by our environment.

"Having said that, I have to acknowledge that I didn't 100 percent deserve to be in the national team, because I wasn't playing a lot at Spurs. I'm not angry with him for that."

Chadli has since returned to the Belgium fold under Martinez, coming off the bench during the 6-0 win over Gibraltar last month.
