Roberto Martinez to call up Vincent Kompany despite fitness worries

Roberto Martinez has said he will call up Manchester City's Vincent Kompany for Belgium's upcoming internationals but has told the defender he must be "completely fit" after his recent issues with injury.

Kompany, 30, has not played for his country since featuring in a Euro 2016 qualifying win against Israel on Oct. 13 last year with a groin injury ruling him out of the finals in the summer.

The problem has limited the centre-back to just three Premier League starts this season, and he was an unused substitute in City's Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday.

Martinez, who was at the Etihad Stadium to see Pep Guardiola's men secure a 3-1 win over the Catalan giants, told La Derniere Heure he will include Kompany when he names his squad for Belgium's matches this month on Friday.

"The important thing for Vincent is that he gets completely fit," Martinez said. "It seems to me that it's important Manchester City's medical staff give clear instructions to Vincent and in return, he tells them how he feels. Things are going in the right direction. When I see the intensity of the half he played in the Manchester derby...

"Since his return, Vincent has played a minute, then 78 minutes, then a half. That shows his comeback is a slow process. The Red Devils are going to bring him in. It's clear Vincent won't play 90 minutes twice, but I'm counting on him."

Martinez, who took over Belgium in the summer after leaving Everton, will take his team into a friendly against Netherlands on Nov. 9 in Amsterdam before they play host to Estonia in a 2018 World Cup qualifier four days later.

Belgium currently have a 100 percent record with three wins from three, are yet to concede a goal and head Group H on goal difference from Greece.
