Thibaut Courtois frustrated by Belgium performance - Marc Wilmots

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has revealed that he spoke with Thibaut Courtois after the Chelsea goalkeeper said his team had been "outclassed" in their defeat against Italy.

Belgium lost 2-0 in Lyon on Monday in their opening Euro 2016 fixture and Courtois, 24, claimed his side had shown "practically nothing" during the game.

"Interviews after the match are always dangerous," Wilmots told RBF.

"When you're a keeper and you've just conceded two goals, you've still got the adrenaline of the game and you react emotionally."

Wilmots is satisfied, however, that Courtois' comments had not been directed at his manager.

He said the pair had a discussion about it on their way back to Belgium's tournament headquarters in Bordeaux.

"I spoke with Thibaut during the flight back," Wilmots told reporters at a news conference.

"He was a little bit frustrated -- 'the Italians were well positioned' etc.

"I asked him if tactics that consisted of putting 10 men behind the ball would interest him. He told me no."

Meanwhile, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has said Belgium will have to prove their worth after getting a "reality check" against Italy.

The side currently occupying second place in the world rankings are now under serious pressure going into their next group game on Saturday against Republic of Ireland in Bordeaux.

"We have both feet on the ground now," Lukaku told the Guardian.

"We know what we have to do now. A lot of people were talking before the tournament about what we can do but we had a reality check against Italy and sometimes that's good to know you still have a long way to go.

"We played against a team that is known for being tactically very strong -- very efficient -- and that's what we have to learn.

"If you want to become a big nation sometimes you have to deal with setbacks. We have to move on, become stronger, work even harder than we did, play well and win the games."
