Belgium's Toby Alderweireld to miss Portugal friendly due to illness

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been ruled out of Belgium's friendly against Portugal on Tuesday through illness.

Alderweireld, 27, has been suffering with a stomach bug and will not travel to Lisbon for the match, which was rearranged from Brussels following last week's terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital.

Belgium are already without centre-backs Jan Vertonghen, sidelined with a knee ligament injury since January, and Vincent Kompany, who has a groin strain.

Alderweireld has not missed a minute of Premier League football so far this season and title-chasing Tottenham hope to have both him and Vertonghen available for Saturday's trip to Liverpool.

In better news for Belgium and Tottenham, Mousa Dembele is fit to face Portugal after an ankle knock.

Spurs have also been boosted by Erik Lamela being available for Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia on Wednesday, despite training alone this week after complaining of a muscle ache.
