Christian Benteke not certain of Euro 2016 place - Belgium's Marc Wilmots

Marc Wilmots has urged Christian Benteke to prove his worth to Liverpool during the run-in.

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has suggested that Liverpool striker Christian Benteke faces a battle to make the squad for Euro 2016.

Benteke's struggles at Anfield since his £32.5 million move from Aston Villa in 2015 have left ground to make up, with the likes of Everton's Romelu Lukaku, Marseille's Michy Batshuayi and Liverpool teammate Divock Origi also vying for spots.

Lukaku has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season, Batshuayi has 13 in Ligue 1 and Origi inched back into Reds manager Jurgen Klopp's plans in February after hamstring and knee injuries.

Benteke, meanwhile, has started only four of his club's past 17 games, all of them coming in the FA Cup.

Wilmots told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad that he sympathised with the fact that the 25-year-old did not appear an obvious fit at Liverpool under Klopp but warned he had work to do to book his place.

"It's difficult for him," Wilmots said. "Klopp arrived [at Liverpool] and visibly made his choice. Benteke is going to have doubts now. We've all gone through that. I understand that and regret it.

"[Benteke] missed the World Cup because of an injury, and missing the Euros would hurt. Now, he has to work. Christian has the time to prove that he can mean something to Liverpool."

However, Wilmots said his squad selection will be based primarily on squad balance.

"I will choose depending on what they bring and not on how well they played in the past few months," he said. "Batshuayi is a poacher. Benteke is better with his head and at linking up. Lukaku has pace and power. My choice will also depend on the wingers I take."
