Standard Liege vs. Zulte-Waregem abandoned as supporters protest

The referee was forced to call off the match at Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Sunday.

Standard Liege's Belgian Jupiler League clash against Zulte Waregem was abandoned in the 90th minute on Sunday when sections of the home crowd tried to force their way through to Standard owner Roland Duchatelet.

The match had already been interrupted with around 10 minutes to go due to unrest in the stands with Zulte-Waregem leading 1-0 through Theo Bongonda's 21st-minute strike.

There were protests throughout the game from Standard fans as their side trailed bottom club Zulte, with a number of fans appearing to depart the game in the 65th minute.

A section of the crowd, however, apparently forced their way into the main stand of the Stade Maurice Dufrasne and tried to gain access to the dugout areas, with the players taken off as a precaution.

The players returned to the pitch and continued the game, but Zulte then went two goals up, and the game was abandoned when supporters -- with a number wearing all-black -- engaged in further protests, including throwing missiles at their own goalkeeper.

James Troisi made it 2-0 in the 88th minute and although Standard pulled a goal back two minutes later through Paul-Jose M'Poku to halve the deficit, the match was brought to a premature conclusion when the referee took the players off following further incidents among the supporters, with seats being thrown onto the pitch.
