Bayern Munich's David Alaba out with ankle injury sustained with Austria

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in Austria's World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

Alaba, 25, injured his left ankle in a challenge shortly before half-time in the 1-1 draw with Georgia on Tuesday, and examinations on Wednesday showed that Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti will have to do without him for the time being.

"David Alaba injured his left ankle in Austria's World Cup qualifier against Georgia on Tuesday night and he is currently sidelined," a Bayern statement read. However, it did not disclose the exact diagnosis or when he could return to training.

Bayern are already without fellow left-back Juan Bernat, who suffered an ankle ligament injury in July, with Ancelotti at that time saying the 24-year-old will be sidelined for "eight to 12 weeks."

Following Bernat's injury in the 4-0 International Champions Cup defeat to AC Milan, 19-year-old Marco Friedl replaced the Spain international, and he alongside Rafinha are options for the left-back position when Bayern travel to Hoffenheim on Saturday.
