Bayern Munich appoint Hasan Salihamidzic as sporting director

Bayern Munich have named former midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic as the club's new sporting director.

The 40-year-old Bosnian's appointment on a three-year deal was announced in a news conference on Monday.

Salihamidzic made over 350 appearances for Bayern during a nine-year spell, winning six Bundesliga titles and one Champions League trophy.

The German champions have not had a sporting director since Matthias Sammer left the club last summer.

Former club captains Philipp Lahm and Oliver Kahn had been among those linked with the role.

Salihamidzic said at the news conference, streamed by Bayern Munich's website: "As a player, I have always given 100 percent, in every training session and in every game. That's exactly how I will fulfil my job as sporting director. I'm delighted."

Club president Uli Hoeness said: "We've been saying for some time that Bayern needs to find a new way. We have to go back to the roots, the junior performance centre, to create a good atmosphere between the fans and all those involved in this club. And who is closer than Hasan Salihamidzic?

"We need a man who has the trust of the players, the board and the fans. We are convinced that we have found the man we have been looking for. "
