Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski needs more ref protection - agent

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski should get more protection from referees, his agent has told Sport Bild.

Maik Barthel said Lewandowski was "on the receiving end of harsh treatment like no other player in the Bundesliga."

The striker missed Bayern's goalless draw at Leverkusen through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card in the win over Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

He suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of the Champions League quarterfinal first leg at home to Real Madrid when he was fouled by Dortmund keeper Roman Burki.

Dortmund defender Marc Bartra was also booked for a challenge that saw his boot make contact with Lewandowski's face.

And Barthels, one of Lewandowski's two agents, said: "It's high time that referees took a closer look.

"Robert is on the receiving end of harsh treatment like no other player in the Bundesliga.

"In contrast, he picks us a yellow card for just a trivial offence. It's hard to understand and disproportionate."

Lewandowski, Bayern's top scorer in the Bundesliga with 26 goals in 27 starts, had two penalty claims turned down in the weekend's 2-2 home draw with Mainz despite appearing to be fouled on both occasions.
