David Alaba a fitness question for Pokal semi vs Dortmund - Ancelotti

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is a doubt for the DFB Pokal holders' semifinal on Wednesday against Borussia Dortmund after going off injured in a 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Mainz.

Alaba suffered a left knee strain and was replaced by Joshua Kimmich after only 17 minutes on Saturday.

"It's not a big problem," Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti said at the postmatch news conference. "But we'll have to wait and see if he can play on Wednesday."

Showing four changes from their dramatic midweek Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, lacklustre Bayern dropped points for a third time in four Bundesliga games against relegation-threatened Mainz.

Bayern fell behind after only three minutes at a stunned Allianz Arena when ex-Barcelona midfielder Bojan opened the scoring, taking advantage of a mistake from Arturo Vidal.

Arjen Robben equalised after 16 minutes with a trademark left-footed finish, before Daniel Brosinski restored the visitors' lead from the penalty spot just before the break.

Thiago Alcantara salvaged a point on 73 minutes as Bayern moved nine points clear of nearest challengers Leipzig who play Schalke on Sunday.

Back-up goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, deputising for the injured Manuel Neuer, told Sky Germany: "We've had a lot of injuries in recent weeks, and today we also lost David [Alaba] early in the game. Towards the end of the season it's always tough, but with our all-round quality we simply must perform better in the first half.

"We found it extremely difficult in the first half and made too many mistakes. In the first half, it was a nothing performance and weren't able to impose ourselves. Of course, Mainz put us under pressure and made it difficult for us and that shouldn't happen.

"However, in the second half, we saw the FC Bayern that everyone knows, dominant and with a super passing game. We should have won today and that's really disappointing."

Ancelotti agreed with his second-choice keeper that the result did not meet expectations, but held out hope for a better showing on Wednesday.

"We didn't play well today, it was difficult for us, but we expected more," Ancelotti said. "We weren't as compact as usual in the first half. We had to do better. We were more compact in the second half. We played better and luckily we managed to equalise.

"I'm confident that we will put in a very different performance against Dortmund."

After the frustrating 2-2 draw, Thomas Muller, captaining the Bavarians for the first time ever in the absence of Philipp Lahm and Neuer was already looking forward to Wednesday's mouthwatering tie.

"We are at home to Dortmund, whoever is not 100 percent motivated for that one doesn't love football," he said.
