Uli Hoeness 'not worried' by Thomas Muller goal drought

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness isn't worried by Thomas Muller's slump in form, telling Sport Bild the former Manchester United target is a "true leader" for the German champions.

Muller, 27, ended a run of 999 minutes without a goal in December against Wolfsburg -- his only strike so far this season in 15 Bundesliga appearances. Muller also failed to score for Germany at Euro 2016. At the same stage of last campaign, Muller had already notched 14 times for Bayern in the Bundesliga on his way to a personal best of 20 league goals.

"Manchester United wanted to pay €100 million for him a year ago. I'm not worried about Thomas," Hoeness told Sport Bild.

The Bavaria-born attacker has started as a substitute five times this season under Carlo Ancelotti, twice spending the entire 90 minutes on the bench -- including the 3-0 Bundesliga win over nearest challengers RB Leipzig in the final game before the winter break.

"I hope he will again become a genuine regular in the side," Hoeness added.

"I'm convinced he can do this. Normally, with his typical self-confidence, Thomas would play at Bayern Munich. He is a true leader at our club -- although I don't say this to put the coach under pressure."

Bayern boss Ancelotti has also backed Muller to emerge from his dip in form, insisting on Monday 'he's more of a team player than a top goal scorer for us."

"He has always worked well for the team. Goals aren't as important for me as his focus on our tactics and following my instructions," he said.
