Robert Lewandowski wanted Bayern Munich stay over Real move - Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti has said that Bayern Munich beat off competition from Real Madrid in persuading Robert Lewandowski to extend his stay at the club.

Lewandowski, 28, signed a new deal to remain at Bayern until 2021 on Tuesday, but had been linked with a move to Madrid in recent months after one of the striker's representatives told Der Spiegel that talks with the European champions had taken place.

"I don't know how close Real actually were to signing him, as both Lewandowski and Bayern wanted an extension," Ancelotti told Spanish football podcast La Brujula.

"Bayern sought a solution. They've renewed and improved Lewandowski's contract."

Lewandowski joined the Bavarians on a free transfer from rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2014, adding two successive Bundesliga titles to the pair he won under Jurgen Klopp at the Westfalenstadion.

After signing his new deal to remain at Bayern, the Poland international wrote on his Twitter account: "This club gives me all I need to make my dreams come true! New challenges ahead of us! MiaSanMia!"
