Uli Hoeness won't 'start beating about the bush' in return to Bayern Munich

Uli Hoeness says Bayern Munich fans can expect the same direct, straight-talking president they were used to in the past if, as expected, he returns to the role this Friday.

Hoeness is the only candidate for election at the Bavarian club's Annual General Meeting on Friday and is therefore set to replace Karl Hopfner, who has filled the role since Hoeness was imprisoned for tax evasion in March 2014.

Just under two years behind bars may have been a humbling experience for the 64-year-old, but he insists he is very much the same man as he prepares to return to Bayern.

"Finding clear words is still going to be my hallmark,'' Hoeness told Kicker magazine. "That is not going to change.

"I certainly won't start beating about the bush.''

Hoeness' outspoken nature endeared him to Bayern fans and saw plenty of schadenfreude among their rivals when he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison in 2014.

He has avoided the public eye since being released early in February this year, but said he soon realised that he cannot remain in the wings for good.

Hoeness, a former Bayern player and West Germany international, had been a director at Bayern for over three decades before stepping down as president in May 2013 after it emerged he was being investigated for tax evasion.
