Bayern's Arjen Robben and Jerome Boateng won't start vs. Hamburg

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben will have to wait for his first start in over six months when the German champions travel to Hamburg on Saturday.

Robben, 32, scored within seven minutes of his introduction as a substitute on his comeback as Bayern moved back to the top of the Bundesliga with a comfortable 3-0 win over Hertha Berlin in midweek.

Making his first Bayern appearance for 200 days since the goalless draw in Dortmund in March, Robben admitted the rapturous welcome from the Munich crowd on his return gave him "goosebumps."

But Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti said at the news conference ahead of the Hamburg trip that the fit-again Netherlands winger will again have to make do with a substitute's role.

"I've spoken to Robben," he said. "He'll be on the bench and will play in the second half."

Jerome Boateng also made a successful comeback in midweek on his first start since tearing a muscle in Germany's Euro 2016 semifinal defeat against France in July, but won't make the XI either.

"Boateng played well against Berlin, he's in good condition but he'll be on the bench," Ancelotti added. "It's the most difficult part of this job, putting one of the stars on the bench."

However, Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski will all definitely start, while Joshua Kimmich, Renato Sanches and Kingsley Coman would all come into contention for a starting place after the trio were rested in midweek against Berlin.

But with Wednesday's tricky Champions League away game against Atletico Madrid in mind, Ancelotti again stressed his strong belief in rotation: "It's important for two reasons: the physical aspect and the mental aspect. Motivating players is key."

And the 57-year-old Italian looked to be in good shape after his first visit to the Oktoberfest on Thursday as Bayern boss.

"I only had two beers and everything is fine. I had no headache. Perhaps I'll try three beers after Cologne [Bayern's next home game]," he joked.
