Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng closing in on Bundesliga injury return

Jerome Boateng has not ruled out a return to the Bayern Munich squad for their first Bundesliga match of the season.

Boateng, 27, sustained a muscle tear in Germany's 2-0 defeat against hosts France at Euro 2016.

The Bayern centre-back resumed training last week as he completed laps at the club's training facilities on Sabener Strasse, but missed the 2-0 German Super Cup win at Dortmund on Sunday.

The German Football of the Year, however, is hopeful that he will be back with the champions soon, even though he believes that it will be difficult to be part of the squad for the Bundesliga season opener against Werder Bremen on Aug. 26.

"I don't want to commit myself to it. It right now looks good, but the Bremen match might come too soon," Boateng, who missed the majority of the second half last term with another muscle bundle tear, told kicker. "I don't want anything to happen again now."

Following another examination of his thigh this week, Boateng could resume training with the ball first individually and then with the rest of the team later this week.

Meanwhile, midfielder Arturo Vidal has been given the all-clear by Bayern's medical department.

The Chile international was on target in Bayern's triumph over Dortmund, but later limped off the pitch.

On Monday, the Bundesliga champions announced on their official website that "Vidal has not sustained a major injury and is expected to resume training on Wednesday."
