Uli Hoeness backed for role on Bayern Munich's supervisory board

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expects Uli Hoeness to become the chairman of Bayern Munich's supervisory board as well as resuming his mantle of club president.

Hoeness will run in Bayern Munich's presidency elections in November, the club has announced.

He was previously Bayern president between 2009 and 2014 but left the role in March 2014 when he was convicted of evading millions of euros in tax through an undeclared Swiss bank account.

Bayern general manager Rummenigge told Suddeutsche Zeitung: "The members of the supervisory board vote for the chairman of the director's board. A solution with Uli at the top would not be a surprise."

For that to happen, Hoeness has to be elected Bayern's president at the club's general election in November.

"Uli is still held in high esteem by fans and the team," Rummenigge said. "He was always very popular, and rightfully so."

Rummenigge also revealed that Hoeness offered Bayern's current president Karl Hopfner a post as vice-president. Hopfner, however, declined the offer and will step down from all offices.

Current vice-president Rudi Schels will also refrain from standing as a candidate in the upcoming election.

Ahead of Bayern's Super Cup game against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, midfielder Thomas Muller told a news conference on Thursday that he would welcome Hoeness as president.

He said: "It's obvious that it will be for good for FC Bayern. For us players he has always been a go-to person."

Rummenigge, meanwhile, believes Philipp Lahm is destined for greater tasks at Bayern in his post-playing career.

"I approve of his off-pitch development," he said. "In my role as managing director he is not only a very pleasant, but also qualified person to communicate with, which is why I can see Philipp fill an important non-playing position at the club in the future."
