Bayern Munich's Renato Sanches out injured for up to four weeks

Renato Sanches has been forced to wait to make his competitive debut for Bayern Munich after the midfielder was ruled out for three to four weeks with a thigh injury sustained in Portugal's Euro 2016 final victory last month.

Sanches, who joined the German champions in a €35 million summer move from Benfica, missed Sunday's training session at Bayern's Sabener Strasse training complex as he continues to recover from the injury picked up during the extra-time win over hosts France on July 10.

The 18-year-old was substituted on 79 minutes and was replaced by Eder, who scored the only goal of the match in the second period of extra time to seal Portugal's first major international trophy.

Bayern, who announced the absence on their official website, expect the midfielder to miss the German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, the first round of the DFB Pokal against Carl Zeiss the following Friday and the Bundesliga curtain-raiser against Werder Bremen on Aug. 26.

However, he could be available for Bayern's away trip to Gelsenkirchen, where they go up against Schalke on the second Bundesliga matchday after the international break on Sept. 9.

Sanches had also been a summer target for Manchester United, and Old Trafford coach Jose Mourinho said at the weekend that he could have signed one of Europe's brightest young talents had he arrived as manager sooner.

Mourinho told Sport TV: "I arrived late. I signed in May. If I had arrived earlier, I'd have fought for him.

"Manchester United watched Renato many times, and maybe I did it even more. In so much time at home, I watched many Benfica and Portuguese league games."
