Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez doubtful for DFB Pokal final

Bayern Munich centre-back Javi Martinez could miss the DFB Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund after the centre-back sustained an ankle injury in training last week.

Martinez, 27, was absent from Bayern Munich's title celebrations on Saturday as the squad received their championship medals, and was also not seen on the balcony of the town hall on Sunday as Bayern celebrated with some 10,000 fans.

"Bayern fans noticed at once that Javi Martínez was not present for the championship celebrations at the Allianz Arena on Saturday and on Marienplatz on Sunday," a statement on the club's official website read.

"The defensive all-rounder sustained an ankle injury in training last Thursday and continued to receive treatment over the weekend in order to be available for selection in the DFB Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund next Saturday."

In recent finals against Dortmund, Martinez played a key role in Bayern successes.

In 2013, he was influential in the Champions League final as Bayern lifted the trophy at Wembley. And the following year, he was named man of the match by football magazine kicker after a 2-0 extra-time win in the DFB Pokal final.

Medhi Benatia started in place of Martinez in Saturday's 3-1 win against Hannover.
