Jerome Boateng closing in on making Bayern Munich comeback

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng says he is only "20 to 30 percent" away from returning to full fitness.

Boateng, 27, sustained a groin injury in the first Bundesliga match of 2016, when Bayern picked up a 2-1 win at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion in January.

The Germany international watched Saturday's 3-0 victory over Schalke from the stands, but is hopeful that his comeback for Bayern is just around the corner.

"I lack 20 to 30 percent," Boateng told Bild about his progress.

The German tabloid suggested that the defender could be an option for next week's Champions League semifinal first leg at Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski has spoken of his return to form for the club.

The Poland international had entered Saturday's win over Schalke without a goal in four matches, but ended it with his eyes firmly set on two Bundesliga landmarks.

A second-half brace took his season tally to 27 league goals, just two short of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 29 in the 2011-12 season. No foreign player has ever scored more goals in one campaign.

Lewandowski is also only three short of becoming the first Bundesliga player to score 30 or more goals in one season since Cologne's Dieter Muller managed to do so 39 years ago.

"I'm delighted," Lewandowski told reporters after the match. "I hope I manage a couple more in the next few games. We need to continue to play well in the Bundesliga so that I can score those three goals."

Of his recent goal drought, he said: "I had a few problems after the international break, it was not my best phase. I feel really good again.

"It's about the details. When you are ordered to rest, you sometimes just don't see it like that. Every player wants to play in every match. But sometimes that's not possible. Sometimes you need to make a short stop to go full throttle again."
