Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski in car accident before Benfica game

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was involved in a car accident four days before their Champions League quarterfinal second leg clash against Benfica on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's side drew 2-2 draw in Lisbon to complete a 3-2 aggregate win to seal a semifinal berth as Lewandowski was left on the bench.

He came on in the 84th minute in place of Thomas Muller, but Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer said the car accident on Sunday had not influenced Guardiola's decision not to start him.

"Accidents happen to a lot of people, but you only rarely see prominent footballers involved." Sammer told Sky. "He is doing alright. These kinds of things happen.

"It was a minor accident. These things happen, but it did not have any influence on [Pep] Guardiola's decision."

Sammer praised Arturo Vidal, who scored in both legs against Benfica, saying: "He came here after the Copa America with no preparation with the team.

"He was good in the first half of the season, and now he is in much better shape. He is there for us now.

"He had already two yellow cards, but played very responsibly."

Bayern return to Bundesliga action with a home game against Schalke on Sunday.
