Pep Guardiola is undervalued in Germany - ex-Bayern star Oliver Kahn

Outgoing Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola does not get the credit he deserves in Germany, former Bayern and Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has told Bild.

Kahn said the ex-Barcelona coach had made the Bundesliga champions "appreciated worldwide for their attractive football" but would face a tougher challenge at Manchester City, the club he joins in the summer.

Guardiola has spent three years at Bayern and is on course to win three consecutive Bundesliga championships. He has also twice steered the Bavarian giants to the semifinals of the Champions League.

"The influence of Guardiola's idea of football has led to Bayern Munich becoming appreciated worldwide for their attractive football and also improved many German players," Kahn said.

"Through that, Guardiola indirectly has a stake in the German 2014 World Cup triumph. But instead of discussing those aspects of football, we busy ourselves with petty-minded debates.

"In Munich, he's most of all measured by the question of if he wins the Champions League. But you can't really plan for that.

"If he only wins the German championship, people will say that's the minimum -- he won't get a round of applause for that."

Kahn said that way of thinking meant a risk "that we reduce a coach like Pep Guardiola to apparently failing at Bayern without winning the Champions League."

He added that in the future "the Premier League is where it's at" and predicted that "the best players will gather there."

"The competition for the championship is much stronger, and it will be a greater challenge for Guardiola than winning the Bundesliga title without major difficulties year in, year out," Kahn, now a pundit for ZDF TV, warned.
