Pep Guardiola hails resilient Bayern side for peforming despite injuries

Pep Guardiola expressed his pride with his remaining Bayern Munich players after the injury-hit club saw off Darmstadt 1-0 in the DFB Pokal round of 16 on Tuesday.

Only five substitutes suited up for Bayern, who have been depleted by injuries to the likes of Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze, Juan Bernat, David Alaba and Medhi Benatia.

And Guardiola hailed the resiliency of his side, who have one Bundesliga game left before the long winter break.

"I'm very proud of my lads," Guardiola said. "We've played with 13, 14 players recently. I'm very satisfied.

"The first half was very good, particularly the first few minutes. It's not easy when your opponents drop so deep with all their players.

"It's a great honour to be the coach of these players. I hope the injured players return after the winter break."

Bayern only managed to score through Xabi Alonso's wonder strike, but Philipp Lahm said they had more opportunities on goal.

"We only failed to make it two early on. We have to blame ourselves for that," Lahm said. "Darmstadt didn't have one real scoring chance over 90 minutes, and that's why it was a deserved win."

Darmstadt boss Dirk Schuster was also pleased with how his side limited Bayern's talent, saying: "In total I'm very proud of my players and the account they gave of themselves here. We allowed relatively few chances over the full 90 minutes, defended very well and gave Bayern a hard fight."
