Arturo Vidal responds to Beckenbauer criticism with a goal for Bayern

Arturo Vidal scored his first goal for Bayern Munich in Saturday's 3-0 win at Darmstadt, answering criticism from honorary president Franz Beckenbauer.

Vidal had come under fire from Beckenbauer for a perceived lack of energy and effort on the pitch, with no Bundesliga assists to his name before finally contributing with a goal.

The midfielder only joined Bayern Munich from Juventus in late July, days before the German Super Cup against Wolfsburg. He flew in directly from South America, where he had won the 2015 Copa America in his native Chile.

Following last week's Champions League victory at Olympiakos, Beckenbauer, who has little influence on team affairs in what is a largely ceremonial role, criticised Vidal for not giving it his all on the pitch, and coach Pep Guardiola later that week leapt to his defence.

But on Saturday, with Bayern resting Philipp Lahm, Xabi Alonso, Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Thiago Alcantara, Vidal operated in a more attacking role in front of holding midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Sebastian Rode.

Vidal scored with a long-range effort in the first half, and later was delighted to have opened his account.

"I've played a lot of minutes so far, and I'm getting into the groove on the pitch," he explained. "It's a different game than at Juve, which was shaped by tactics, and the team sitting deep,

"It's different at Bayern, we've got a squad with a huge footballing quality."

The Chile international did not directly comment on Beckenbauer's words, but sporting executive Matthias Sammer told kicker that Vidal had been aware of the situation.

"We've explained it to him," Sammer said. "Franz has won everything and sometimes is there to spur us on a bit. Bayern are his club, that's why holds it against him.

"Franz was wrong about it. Arturo did not have a preseason, people forget this. He joined us, and immediately played. Now we play every three days, he can't train and find his rhythm."

Beckenbauer, meanwhile, explained to Bild that he was "a bit annoyed that Vidal did not run enough in some situations," and that he was delighted to see him score for Bayern. "Of course, Vidal is an important player," he said.
